Danielle Pechet from Vernon is set to shine at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. She’s representing Team Canada in snowshoeing.
Her first race was on Tuesday, March 11, where she participated in the 800-meter preliminary round. Danielle finished fourth with a time of 5 minutes and 27.21 seconds, just 11 seconds behind the third-place athlete from Hong Kong.
Her teammates, Annick Leger and Meghan Josling from Ontario, took the top two spots in the race. Danielle will have more chances to compete on Wednesday, with medal events starting on Thursday.
Also from Vernon, Les Sigal is one of six coaches for Canada’s cross-country skiing team. Canada has 12 athletes in this sport, with half of them hailing from British Columbia. Krissy Krnasty from Vernon is serving as the Team Nurse at the Games.
In total, Team Canada features 90 athletes competing in five different winter sports. The delegation includes 24 coaches, along with 14 leaders and five mission staff.
The Special Olympics World Winter Games is the world’s largest multi-sport event focused on inclusion and unity. With over 1,500 athletes from 102 different delegations, this event showcases the spirit of acceptance and teamwork through sport.
