EAGAN, Minn. — Carson Wentz has shown incredible dedication during his time with the 2025 Minnesota Vikings.
After starting five games while battling pain in his left shoulder, Wentz has now been placed on Injured Reserve. This decision came on the same day the Vikings announced they had picked up tight end Ben Sims from waivers.
Wentz’s shoulder injury occurred during the Week 5 game against Cleveland in London. Despite the pain, he led a game-winning drive in the second half, completing all nine of his passes for 71 yards, capped by a touchdown throw to Jordan Addison.
After a bye week, Wentz took to the field again in Week 7 against the team that drafted him, the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, the Vikings fell short in a close 28-22 loss. The team’s struggles continued as they headed to Los Angeles for a Thursday night game, a challenging scenario for any player, especially one recovering from injury.
Wentz pushed through, wearing extra bracing on his shoulder that he hadn’t used before. Viewers noticed him wincing after some plays, a testament to his determination. Despite facing fierce pressure, with the Chargers hitting him multiple times, Wentz remained resilient, insisting to Head Coach Kevin O’Connell that he wanted to stay in the game.
With just under two minutes left, the Vikings brought in rookie Max Brosmer, who completed several quick passes to help close out the game. Wentz ended his run with the Vikings, holding a record of 2-3 in his five starts. He joined the team in late August after a high ankle sprain sidelined second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
As the Vikings sit at 3-4, they look ahead to a matchup against the Detroit Lions (5-2) on November 2. The challenges ahead are significant, and they will need all hands on deck to make a push for the playoffs.
Wentz’s journey highlights not just his personal struggles but also the broader challenges athletes face when injuries strike. According to a recent study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine, nearly 50% of professional athletes deal with long-term injuries affecting their performance. His story resonates with many fans who admire the grit it takes to compete at such a high level.
