On a recent Wednesday, the parking lot of the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club turned into a vibrant hub of community spirit. Nearly 300 cars lined up, each representing families from Wellington, eager to receive free groceries and essential food items.
This event was part of a remarkable effort supported by local authorities and dedicated volunteers. The Citizen Observer Patrol (COP) played a crucial role. Volunteers, including Capt. Mike Anderson and his wife Mary Monnet, were on-site directing traffic and ensuring that the distribution ran smoothly.
The distribution started at 10 a.m. and continued until 1 p.m. Volunteers worked tirelessly, loading trunks and back seats with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other staples donated by Restoration Bridge. Families left with wholesome food, including meats, bread, and beverages.
The initiative aims to assist families in Wellington and nearby areas who are facing financial hardships. Ensuring access to healthy and nutritious food is key to building a stronger community. According to the USDA, about 10.5% of households in the U.S. struggle to provide enough food for their families, highlighting the importance of such programs.
Restoration Bridge, founded in 2005 by Pastor Daniel West, is crucial to this effort. The organization partners with around 50 food and grocery stores, including Publix, to source food for distribution across Palm Beach County. Each year, they provide a staggering 13.45 million pounds of food to 1.3 million families. This model not only helps those in need but eliminates barriers to participation, as no approval is required to receive assistance.
