It’s been a year since Louis Rees-Zammit made the bold decision to chase his dream of playing in the NFL, leaving the world of rugby union behind. His choice stirred up quite a buzz, especially since Wales finished the 2024 season winless without him. Now, as the NFL season wraps up, changes are happening, particularly with his team, the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Recently, the Jaguars parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson after three challenging years and a disappointing 4-13 record this season. Rees-Zammit’s attempt to transition from rugby to American football has had its ups and downs. He started with the International Player Pathway (IPP), a program designed to help international players learn the ropes of the NFL over ten weeks. Initially, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs but was later part of the Jaguars’ roster.
Phoebe Schecter, an NFL analyst, noted that with a new head coach on the horizon, Rees-Zammit’s future is uncertain. Each new coach typically evaluates the entire team and reconsiders existing player roles. Schecter highlighted that players like Rees-Zammit are seen as low-risk assets since they don’t take up traditional roster spots.
Throughout his journey, Rees-Zammit has switched between positions, including running back and special teams. Schecter believes his best fit might be as a wide receiver. She pointed out that his speed and agile skills from rugby could be valuable. However, the key for him is to boost his football knowledge. “He has to soak up as much as he can,” Schecter advised, emphasizing that his athletic abilities lay a strong foundation for success.
As the Jaguars move forward, they haven’t signed Rees-Zammit for a reserve contract, allowing him to explore opportunities with other teams. Schecter mentioned that while the Jaguars’ season is over, Rees-Zammit is likely working hard to re-sign with them or find a spot elsewhere in the NFL.
Rees-Zammit isn’t the first rugby player to give American football a shot. Christian Wade made a similar transition in 2018, joining the Buffalo Bills after completing the IPP program. Schecter shared that Wade’s dedication stood out, as he was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. These habits are crucial in adapting to the new style of play, learning the team’s culture, and mastering the playbook.
There’s also a growing connection between rugby and American football as both sports begin to share tactics and movements. Schecter noted that rugby plays are increasingly appearing in the NFL and vice versa. This crossover means that Rees-Zammit brings a unique perspective, potentially adding value to any team he joins. Schecter feels that he stands to benefit regardless of the outcome of his journey, stating, “He cannot lose in this situation.”
