Air Canada is facing a major disruption this summer as it cancels flights due to a looming strike by over 10,000 flight attendants. The union claims that workers are struggling with low wages and unpaid labor for essential tasks when planes are on the ground.
Starting Thursday, Air Canada will begin suspending services, with a complete shutdown expected by Saturday. This situation could impact about 130,000 customers daily.
Negotiations between Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) have been ongoing since March. The key issues include fair wages and compensation for work performed before takeoff. Right now, flight attendants are unpaid for tasks they do on the ground, leading to frustration among staff.
Air Canada has stated that it’s offered a substantial pay increase of over 38%, but the union argues that this doesn’t keep up with inflation. They also propose full compensation for pre-flight duties, while Air Canada’s response was to offer just 50% pay for that work.
This week, the union rejected a request for arbitration, where an independent party would decide the outcome of the negotiations. They stated that Air Canada has not adequately addressed their main concerns.
Michael Rousseau, Air Canada’s CEO, expressed regret over the disruption. The airline is coordinating with other carriers to help affected customers find alternative travel options during this busy season.
Federal Minister Patty Hajdu commented on social media, noting she is keeping an eye on the situation but believes that the best solutions come from direct negotiations between the parties involved.
