Why Brazilian Gamers Are Outraged by the Sudden PS5 Price Increase: What You Need to Know

Sony has recently raised prices for many games in the Brazilian PlayStation Store, leaving players frustrated. This change affects both first-party and third-party titles, even hitting launch games like Demon’s Souls.

According to Sony, market challenges, such as shifting exchange rates, are to blame. For instance, the price of the new release Death Stranding 2: On the Beach jumped from R$349.90 (about $63.80) to R$399.90 (around $72.98) just days after its launch. Many gamers pointed out that they can find these titles cheaper on platforms like Steam. To add to the burden, gaming hardware is also notably expensive in Brazil.

Sony defended these price hikes in a statement: "Pricing decisions vary by region and are based on the current economic environment."

Historically, PlayStation has drawn a global audience, but the PS5 is falling behind in Europe due to high prices. Similar trends could be emerging in South America as well. In the U.S., the PS5 Digital Edition’s price rose from $399.99 to $449.99 a couple of years ago, showing that even there, prices are not immune to change.

A survey by Newzoo indicates that 55% of Brazilian gamers feel the rising costs are making games less accessible. This sentiment is widespread on social media, with many users sharing their frustrations. Hashtags like #PSPriceHike have been trending as players express their discontent.
