The buzz around the Ravens and the upcoming draft is heating up. Many mock drafts suggest Baltimore will pick Ioane in the first round. However, some have them leaning toward a wide receiver like Spencer Fano from Utah or even an edge rusher.
While cornerback isn’t a top priority for the Ravens, that could change if LSU’s Mansoor Delane is still on the board when they make their pick at No. 14. Delane is highly regarded and expected to go early, but as history shows, players sometimes drop. ESPN’s Jamison Hensley noted that Delane might slip if teams decide to focus on offensive linemen instead.
Hensley believes there’s a chance Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy could be the first cornerback selected. If Delane does fall, Baltimore may snatch him up. With Marlon Humphrey turning 31 soon and becoming a free agent next season, the need for a strong cornerback could become more pressing.
Jeff Zrebiec from The Athletic thinks Delane could be the best option available for the Ravens. He points out that over the last few drafts, they have often chosen defensive backs. Yet, if Delane’s there, General Manager Eric DeCosta might find him too hard to resist.
Delane’s skills remind many of a potential “shutdown corner,” a valuable asset in today’s NFL. The Ravens’ future plans might also require attention in this position, as both Humphrey and Chidobe Awuzie are on track to hit free agency next year.
Interestingly, the Ravens do have a solid safety lineup with Kyle Hamilton, Malaki Starks, and Jaylinn Hawkins. Yet, ESPN’s Matt Miller suggests that doesn’t rule out the possibility of drafting another safety. There’s speculation that the team has been doing extensive research on this position, although it might not be for a first-round pick.
As teams gear up for the draft, it’s clear the Ravens will keep a close eye on the cornerback situation. The choices they make could shape their lineup for years to come.
