Jim Knowles made a notable career shift from being Ohio State’s defensive coordinator to joining Penn State. In a recent interview, he revealed that timing played a crucial role in this decision. It wasn’t any personal conflict with the Ohio State coaching staff; rather, it was the lack of a timely contract extension that prompted him to explore other options.
Knowles wanted a new contract before the College Football Playoff championship game against Notre Dame. He stated that had he received an offer, he likely wouldn’t have considered leaving. “I didn’t want to put anyone in a tough position right after the national championship,” he explained.
After Ohio State’s big win, Knowles wasted no time. Just two days later, he reached out to Penn State’s head coach, James Franklin, at 5:06 a.m. during Franklin’s recruiting trip. “With the season wrapped up, everything was coming to a head quickly. If I was going to explore my options, I had to make that call,” Knowles noted.
From there, offers poured in. Knowles had transformed Ohio State’s struggling defense into one of the best in the nation. Under his leadership, the team became renowned for allowing only 12.9 points and 254.6 total yards per game—a remarkable turnaround in three years.
Though Ohio State eventually offered him a lucrative extension, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator at $2.75 million, Knowles chose the $3.1 million offer from Penn State. He also had similar offers from schools like Oklahoma and Notre Dame.
The decision became clearer when Ohio State discouraged him from attending the team’s championship celebration. “That felt awkward,” Knowles admitted. “You start to feel like there’s something more going on.”
Being originally from Philadelphia also played a role in his choice to join Penn State. As Knowles prepares for his new role, he looks forward to facing Ohio State at Ohio Stadium on November 1. Both teams are seen as strong contenders for the national title in 2025.
In terms of broader trends, college football coaching changes have surged recently. According to a report by the NCAA, more than 30% of head coaching positions in major programs shifted last season—a statistic that reflects the competitive landscape of college sports today.
