Why Experiencing ‘Companion’ with Fresh Eyes Enhances Your Viewing Pleasure

In Los Angeles, the buzz around Warner Bros. Pictures’ new film “Companion” has many eager to explore its surprises. Directed and written by Drew Hancock, the movie is a sci-fi psychological thriller filled with unexpected twists.

Hancock believes that going in with little knowledge enhances the experience. “Don’t watch the trailer or look at the posters. Just grab a ticket and enjoy the ride,” he advises.

The film centers on Iris, portrayed by Sophie Thatcher. Iris is described by Thatcher as the “most human character” in the story. Her journey is marked by empathy and strength, showcasing her struggle for control, a theme that resonates, especially with women today.

Filming “Companion” wasn’t easy. The crew faced a six-month halt due to Hollywood strikes, leading to concerns about the movie feeling outdated by the time it released. Jack Quaid, who stars alongside Thatcher, expressed apprehension about the pace of technological advancements. “I wondered if our theme would feel old by the time the film came out,” he shared.

In “Companion,” AI figures into the story as companions that take on human forms. This concept raises questions about loneliness in modern society. Megan Suri highlights this by saying, “People are seeking connections; we can’t blame them for that.” Lukas Gage humorously noted that if people can love their pets, loving a robot isn’t a stretch. Harvey Guillen added that self-love is key before seeking love from anyone or anything else, robotic or otherwise.

As technology rapidly evolves, Hancock emphasizes that AI is merely a tool. He believes it can be used for good or ill, depending on human choices. He remarked, “We have the power to decide how we use AI.”

As for Iris’s future, Hancock reassures fans that she’s not leading any robot revolts. Instead, he imagines her finding peace on a farm, enjoying the simple beauty of sunsets—“the most human thing to do.”

“Companion” is currently in theaters, showcasing a talented cast that includes Sophia Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Megan Suri, Lukas Gage, and Harvey Guillen.
