Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, is facing criticism after yet another disappointing All-Star Weekend. The league’s new format, a four-team mini-tournament featuring games to just 40 points, has been heavily questioned. Warriors star Draymond Green expressed frustration over the lack of competitiveness and defense, which many fans have also noticed in recent years.
This year, Team Candice Parker was made up of Rising Star challenge winners rather than All-Stars, which raised eyebrows. Shaquille O’Neal’s team claimed victory, with Stephen Curry earning MVP honors. However, the weekend left many attendees feeling unsatisfied, reflecting a growing concern about the direction of the NBA under Silver’s guidance.
“The NBA needs a new Commissioner,” tweeted WFAN host Brandon Tierney. “Silver is driving the league into the ground. It’s unrecognizable.”
Players expressed frustration with the long breaks between games. Trae Young of the Hawks shared his thoughts, saying, “I didn’t like the breaks. The games were too short. It feels like they’re trying to extend the TV time.”
In other events, G-League player Mac McClung won his third dunk contest, while stars like LeBron James and Anthony Edwards were sidelined due to injuries, leaving two roster spots vacant for others.
NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor slammed the weekend, noting how entertainment figures like Kevin Hart received more screen time than the All-Stars. He criticized the excessive breaks and the reliance on lesser-known players for marquee events.
Bill Simmons from The Ringer reflected on the overall experience, stating that the All-Star weekend has been a recurring issue for the league. An anonymous general manager weighed in, saying Silver’s focus on tournaments, including the NBA Cup and play-in games, hasn’t been beneficial to the league.
Despite the criticism, some players found positives in the new format. Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander described it as a “step in the right direction” competitively, while Knicks’ Jalen Brunson suggested that pushing the games to 50 points could improve the experience.
