Why Former Nintendo Duo Warns We May Have to Wait for a 3D Mario on Switch 2—The Unexpected Role of Donkey Kong

Former Nintendo marketers Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang recently shared insights about the upcoming Donkey Kong Bananza for the Nintendo Switch 2. After the latest Direct, excitement for this title has soared.

Many fans believe that the game is being developed by Nintendo’s renowned Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) team. EPD is known for blockbuster titles like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. However, Nintendo has not confirmed this speculation.

Ellis mentioned, "If EPD is working on Donkey Kong, we might have to wait a while for the next 3D Mario game." He emphasized that while this team delivers high-quality games, they take their time in development. Yang added that we could see a 3D Mario release only four to five years after Bananza, likely toward the middle of the console’s life cycle.

This isn’t the first time Nintendo has collaborated with external studios. Companies like Bandai Namco and Retro Studios have contributed to past titles. For instance, Retro Studios rejuvenated the Donkey Kong series on the Wii and Wii U.

The anticipation around Donkey Kong Bananza showcases the ongoing love for Nintendo’s iconic characters. As we await its release on July 17th, many wonder how this title will shape the future of the franchise and what new adventures await our favorite ape.
