In Jupiter, Florida, Yankees GM Brian Cashman shared concerns about Gerrit Cole’s elbow after the ace expressed worry about his injury. Cashman admitted he’s preparing for the worst, saying, “We will see how it plays out. I hope for the best but think about the worst.” This isn’t the first time the team has faced uncertainty with Cole; he dealt with elbow issues last spring that led to nerve inflammation after just one start.
After feeling discomfort during his second spring training outing against the Twins, Cole had tests done to understand his condition. At 34, he’s aware of the stakes and expressed concern over needing surgery on the elbow that caused him to miss time last season.
Cashman acknowledged Cole’s worries but felt that both player and team are better equipped to handle this situation now, having gone through it before. “Last year was more emotional for him,” Cashman noted. “This year, he’s already been down this road, which helps him manage the stress.” It gives them a clearer path forward in dealing with the injury as they discuss the best course of action.
As the Yankees look to adjust their roster if Cole is sidelined, they’re facing challenges. This comes on the heels of Luis Gil, last year’s American League Rookie of the Year, being sidelined with a significant lat strain, expected to keep him out until at least June. Marcus Stroman is set to step in for Gil, while Cole’s absence could open spots for pitchers like Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco.
The Yankees have been proactive in handling Cole’s offseason. Cashman shared that they altered his throwing regimen and he seemed to be on track, leading to hopes for a smooth start to the season. Last season, Cole returned strong after rehab, posting a 3.41 ERA over 17 regular-season starts and a solid 2.17 ERA in five postseason games despite the team struggling in the World Series.
Now, as they await more results on Cole’s elbow, the Yankees are left hoping for the best as they navigate another uncertainty with their ace pitcher.
