Why Hosting Thanksgiving Matters: The Impact on Young Buyers’ Housing Choices This Holiday Season

Whether it’s Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving, younger folks looking to buy a home are thinking about how to host these special gatherings. A recent survey by Realtor.com shows that many millennials and Gen Zers consider hosting a big part of their home search.

Over half of U.S. adults (52%) said that the ability to host Thanksgiving dinner influenced their home choices. Among the younger crowd, this interest was even higher—60% of both Gen Z and millennials took hosting into account, compared to just 30% of baby boomers.

According to real estate broker Cara Ameer from Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty in Florida, younger buyers want homes that feel permanent. She says, “Many of my younger clients want a place to celebrate holidays and family meals.”

When it comes to essentials for hosting, space matters. A spacious family room and a big kitchen were the top priorities for 92% of respondents. A large dining room was important for 86%. Interestingly, the kitchen’s size was deemed more critical than fancy appliances—only 12% felt they needed a double oven.

Another significant factor is having extra bathrooms. Nearly half (45%) of those surveyed preferred an extra bathroom over an extra bedroom (44%). Among Gen Z, that preference leaned even more towards bathrooms (48% versus 39%).

Reasons for wanting that extra bathroom might be tied to an unspoken truth about post-Thanksgiving chaos. Known as “Brown Friday,” this day sees a spike in plumbing issues. Experts note that many homeowners experience problems with clogged sinks and toilets after the holiday feasts.

In fact, data shows that plumbing companies brace for busy days right after Thanksgiving. Many issues arise from overstuffed garbage disposals and toilets overwhelmed by non-dissolvable items. This trend makes having an extra bathroom not just a luxury, but a practical choice for holiday hosts.

Remember, if you’re house hunting and want to be the go-to spot for holiday gatherings, aiming for an extra bathroom could save you a lot of stress down the line!
