Why India and China Must Unite Against Tariffs and Trade Wars: Insights from the Chinese Envoy

New Delhi: China and India are urged to stand together against power struggles and trade wars. Chinese ambassador Xu Feihong emphasized this during a recent event, pointing to the significance of mutual respect in improving relations, especially amid rising tensions with the Trump administration, which increased tariffs on Indian goods to 50%.

Xu shared a four-point strategy to enhance ties between the two nations. He believes that neither country’s boundary issues should overshadow their relationship, and there’s immense potential for expanding bilateral trade.

These comments came shortly after Prime Minister Modi and President Xi met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin. Their discussions aimed to ease tensions that escalated after violent clashes in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

In his address celebrating China’s 76th founding anniversary, Xu reiterated that both nations should resist hegemony and work together for the Global South’s interests. He stated that their relationship holds global significance as they are two ancient civilizations and large developing countries.

Xu noted that trade between China and India from January to August this year increased by 10.4%, reaching $102 billion. He expressed China’s willingness to deepen cooperation across various sectors and facilitate more exchanges, including over 265,000 visas issued to Indian citizens by September 22.

He stressed that open dialogue is crucial for bridging differences. The goal should be to respect each other’s core interests while advancing comprehensive cooperation. Xu’s remarks indicate a thoughtful approach to navigate the complexities of their relationship without allowing historical disputes to hinder progress.
