JAKARTA – The Korean Wave, or K-Wave, is evolving in Indonesia. It’s not just about enjoying entertainment anymore; Korean culture is now merging with Indonesian life.
A study titled “Beyond K-Wave: The Root of Indonesia’s Fusion Culture” highlights how the MZ generation (Millennials and Gen Z) is creatively blending global influences into their everyday routines. This mix results in what researchers call Fusion Culture, where Korean trends are adapted to fit local values.
According to a survey from December 2025, around 90% of respondents aged 18-35 showed a strong interest in Korean culture. Surprisingly, 87% believe this interest will last, not fade away anytime soon. The journey often begins with K-Pop music (79% engagement) and Korean dramas (72%), but it doesn’t stop there. It extends into food (66%), beauty (44%), and fashion (39%).
One notable finding is that 85% of the MZ generation actively mix Korean elements with local customs. A good example is how some Indonesians enjoy Kimchi with sambal or incorporate Korean slang into their conversations. This shows they aren’t just passively consuming culture; they’re reshaping it to reflect their identity.
K-Wave also serves an emotional purpose. About 79% of respondents find Korean content inspiring, and 51% use it as a way to unwind. As one respondent put it, “When you’re tired, watching Korean shows helps you relax.” This emotional connection helps explain why K-Wave resonates so deeply with many Indonesians.
Furthermore, this Fusion Culture phenomenon is shifting how people view brands. Nearly 95% are more likely to support companies that genuinely incorporate Korean culture. A whopping 98% prefer brands that mix this global culture with local roots. It’s all about authenticity and relevance.
The study introduces the F.U.S.I.O.N. formula: Fuse, Use, Shape, Integrate, Own. It emphasizes that cultural influence succeeds in Indonesia when it seamlessly becomes part of the local identity. Rather than being merely an import, K-Wave is now learning from and adapting to the Indonesian character.
In a rapidly changing world, such cultural adaptations remind us of how interconnected we all are. As global influences become woven into daily life, they spark new conversations and expressions that enrich our experiences.
