AI is popping up everywhere, even in places where it isn’t wanted. A recent example comes from LG smart TVs. Users are sharing their frustration on Reddit about a Microsoft Copilot app that appeared on their screens after a software update. Many found that this app is stuck on their home screen and can’t be removed.
The app showed up with a recent update to webOS, the operating system LG has owned since 2013. Users say they noticed the Copilot app right at startup, and it now sits alongside familiar streaming apps like Netflix and Hulu.
At CES 2025, LG announced its plan to emphasize AI in its TVs, claiming that Copilot would help users find and organize information more efficiently. Many are left scratching their heads, wondering what complex tasks they might need assistance with on their TVs.
The frustrating part? LG’s manual confirms that users can’t delete these preinstalled apps. According to the guidelines, “You cannot delete the preinstalled apps or system apps on your Smart TV.”
But LG isn’t the only company pushing AI on users. Google’s new Gemini AI is included in certain TCL models, and Samsung has plans to incorporate AI into its TVs as well. Unlike LG, though, Samsung opted not to place icons for these tools permanently on the home screen.
Interestingly, LG has taken its commitment to AI even further. The latest TV models feature AI branding beyond just Copilot. They come with tools called “AI Picture Pro” and “AI Sound Pro.” There’s even a built-in chatbot, just in case you need to chat while scrolling through content options.
User reactions to LG’s move are mixed. While some appreciate the innovative features, others feel overwhelmed by the forced upgrades. A 2023 survey by the Consumer Technology Association found that 62% of consumers want more control over what apps come preloaded on their devices.
It’s a challenging balance for tech companies, trying to enhance user experience without burdening them with unwanted features. As AI tech continues to evolve, users will demand more transparency and control over their devices.
