West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently called for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, to be awarded to Sunita Williams, an Indian-born NASA astronaut. Williams just returned from an arduous nine-month mission at the International Space Station (ISS), which was extended due to a technical issue with their Boeing spacecraft.

During a session in the state Assembly, Banerjee praised Williams and her crew for their resilience. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "They endured a lot of suffering. Thanks to everyone involved in bringing them back safely."

Banerjee compared Williams’ experience to that of Kalpana Chawla, another Indian-American astronaut who tragically lost her life during a mission. She highlighted that both women faced mechanical issues, showing the unpredictability and risks of space travel.

"Sunita is India’s daughter," Banerjee emphasized, urging the central government to recognize Williams’ significant contributions to space exploration with the Bharat Ratna. Such an honor could not only acknowledge her achievements but also encourage her ongoing work in the field.

Williams, alongside her fellow astronaut Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore and their team, spent 285 days in space, completing an incredible 4,576 orbits around Earth and traveling approximately 195 million kilometers. They safely landed at the Johnson Space Center in Houston on Tuesday evening.

According to a recent report from NASA, only a few astronauts have spent extended missions like Williams, highlighting the physical and psychological challenges they face. For instance, staying in space affects bone density and muscle mass, requiring significant rehabilitation upon return.
