These days, many tech-savvy people are turning to AI for everything—job searches, online shopping, and yes, therapy.

Interestingly, recent research shows that men are more likely to prefer AI chatbots for discussing their feelings. In a survey focused on men aged 22-45 in the US and UK, Use.AI reported that 78% of respondents felt more at ease sharing personal emotions with AI than with friends or family.

Dr. Shahrzad Jalali, a licensed clinical psychologist, pointed out that using AI isn’t a sign of emotional weakness in men. Instead, it reflects a long-standing developmental issue. “AI offers a unique place for men to express themselves safely,” she explained.

According to Dr. Jalali, AI provides a manageable space for vulnerability. “It’s private and doesn’t react in visible ways. For men who fear losing control by showing emotions, this low-risk environment encourages them to dip their toes into emotional exploration.”

This is vital, especially as we see more discussions around male loneliness and rising suicide rates. The pressure to “man up” can actually widen emotional gaps, making AI an appealing first step for many.

Moreover, the anonymous nature of chatting with AI reduces feelings of shame. Dr. Jalali suggested that for some men, this might be the first doorway into being more emotionally aware.

However, she cautioned that if men only open up in anonymous spaces, it could hinder growth. “If they never face their fears in real relationships, they won’t learn that vulnerability is okay,” she said.

The survey revealed that many men use AI as a practice ground for difficult conversations. About 48% said chatting with AI helped them rehearse tough discussions, while 31% felt more ready to engage in real-life talks afterward.

“If a man sorts through feelings of jealousy with AI, the next step should be discussing it with his partner. AI can’t replace the real-world interactions that foster genuine healing,” Dr. Jalali stressed.

Despite the benefits, if AI is merely a way to avoid vulnerability, it could reinforce harmful cultural expectations that push men to hide their emotions. As Dr. Jalali put it, “Technology should make human connections richer, not replace them.”

User reactions have been mixed. While many appreciate AI’s help with refining thoughts and feelings, experts warn that it can’t replace the essential human connection needed for true growth. The human nervous system reacts in nuanced ways that AI simply can’t replicate.

A 2025 study showed that AI can be problematic, sometimes giving harmful advice to those in crisis situations. More than 20% of interactions with AI in sensitive scenarios led to inappropriate suggestions.

While over half of the survey participants reported that AI helped them recognize patterns in their emotions, Dr. Jalali noted its limitations. “AI doesn’t pick up on what’s being avoided. It can help you see patterns you identify, but a therapist helps you uncover deeper insights,” she said.

In summary, AI can provide a starting point for many men seeking to explore their emotions. However, it’s crucial to remember that the most significant growth often happens through real, human interactions.
