Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
I’ve been a Star Wars fan for as long as I can remember. Growing up with the Original Trilogy shaped my love for this universe. It’s exciting now that we have so much new content, especially after a long dry spell. While not every new show or film is flawless, I’ve enjoyed what Disney has done with the franchise since they took over.
Having just watched Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, I must say I might be loving Star Wars more than ever. This series is a delightful addition to the galaxy and has rekindled my enthusiasm. I’m eager for more stories that draw inspiration from this show, creating a fresh path for the franchise.
Since The Mandalorian first aired, Star Wars has played a prominent role on Disney+. While I’ve appreciated many of the offerings, not all have been top-notch. Later seasons of The Mandalorian felt overly reliant on references, and some shows, like The Book of Boba Fett, struggled with their narrative structure. Even though I’m a fan of Ahsoka Tano, I’m not rushing to see Season 2 of Ahsoka.
Many might argue that the first season of Andor is the best Star Wars series available, and I agree. But for me, Skeleton Crew has taken the lead as my personal favorite. I usually prefer to binge-watch series, but I couldn’t wait with this one. The fun I saw in the trailer hooked me immediately.
Watching Skeleton Crew was a joy. It reminded me of the exhilaration I felt during The Force Awakens, but for different reasons. The show has a unique charm that made it feel special and distinct within the Star Wars universe.
One of its biggest strengths is its ability to break free from the familiar Star Wars conventions. Nicknamed Star Wars Goonies before release, it actually feels more like Star Wars Treasure Island. It offers something fresh while still being rooted in the Star Wars world.
In Skeleton Crew, the main characters live on At Attin, a planet cut off from the galaxy since the events of the prequels. They are mostly unaware of the Galactic Empire and its fall. Although typical Star Wars elements—like Jedi and lightsabers—appear, the show’s focus is more on kids trying to find their way home rather than bigger galactic conflicts.
This series captures the essence of Star Wars while also presenting a story that feels fresh and exciting. I sincerely hope future creators take cues from its approach, exploring new themes rather than relying on established narratives.
With Skeleton Crew setting a new tone, I’m eager to see even more innovative stories in the Star Wars universe. Now that we’ve seen a kids’ adventure, how about exploring a Star Wars horror story or a romantic drama? There’s so much potential in the galaxy; we need stories that reflect its vastness and diversity.
Despite my eagerness for new directions, I am still excited for Andor Season 2 and the next film featuring Daisy Ridley’s return. I’ll definitely tune in for The Mandalorian & Grogu when it premieres next year. However, I hope that some upcoming projects offer a break from the same old stories that have shaped Star Wars for decades.
