When it comes to Pixel phones, the camera has always been a key selling point. Over the years, though, it seems that Google’s camera edge has faded. Other brands have made significant strides, and my own experiences have left me feeling that the Pixel camera isn’t as impressive as it once was. But despite everything, I still prefer to carry a Pixel.

From the first Pixel release, Google impressed us with its mobile photography skills. Each new Pixel effectively raised the bar. For some time, it truly stood out as the best in its category.
However, that dominance is changing. Other companies are now experimenting with advanced camera sensors, offering stunning results. Google’s strength has traditionally been in post-processing software, but even that is becoming more competitive.
Personally, I feel that my recent Pixel shots haven’t amazed me as they used to. The vibrant contrast I enjoyed with earlier models is absent in the newer versions. I especially noticed this with the Pixel 9 series; it feels less exciting than when I was using the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro.
Will Sattelberg from Android Police captured this sentiment well. He pointed out how the recent Pixel camera has appeared “flat,” with shadows appearing overexposed even in bright conditions.
It’s disappointing, as the images from my Pixel lack energy. In real life, details can sometimes vanish in shadows, while my Pixel emphasizes those areas too much, losing the lively feel. It starkly contrasts with the OnePlus 13, which consistently produced beautiful, vibrant shots.
In the end, I still choose a Pixel. It’s not just about the hardware or software. It’s the consistency of its camera that keeps me attached.
While the OnePlus 13 might snap at stunning images occasionally, the Pixel delivers more reliable results. I might sacrifice some detail with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but at least I know most shots will turn out well, even if post-editing is needed.
Google is indeed pushing for improvement. Features like “Video Boost” introduced on the Pixel 8 Pro show that they are committed to enhancing quality, and user-friendly AI tools like Best Take make the whole experience better.
