On a Monday morning, I reached out to my coworkers at The Verge for tips on picking a gaming PC. I wanted a small, portable machine that could fit under my TV or move to my desk for gaming and work. The Steam Deck has already transformed how I view the Steam ecosystem, with a huge game catalog and features like cross-device libraries and cloud saves, all without requiring a subscription fee. The microSD card slot means I can easily switch games between my devices, similar to a modern game cartridge.
Before discovering the Steam Machine, I considered options like the Framework Desktop (which looked promising) or a gaming laptop (portable but pricey). Building my own PC felt daunting for someone like me. The Steam Machine offers the convenience I need for TV gaming and reliability similar to my Steam Deck, especially with a toddler running around.
Valve has made PC gaming easier for console gamers with the Steam Deck. Verified games often work without any fuss, and custom controls and graphics settings can enhance less-optimized titles. The Steam Deck combines a sleek interface with comfortable handling. If Valve can replicate this ease of use in a living room device, it could attract even more players to PC gaming.
Valve plans to launch the Steam Machine next year, but they haven’t announced the price yet. Rather than hunt for Black Friday deals on other gaming PCs, I think I’ll save up for the Steam Machine instead.
