Many believe it might even win Best Picture at the Academy Awards in March, as it’s also competing for Best International Feature Film.
However, the buzz isn’t all good. Critics have raised concerns about the film’s portrayal of transgender issues. Some have called it a “step backward for trans representation,” with LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD particularly vocal in its criticism. Others take issue with the film’s depiction of Mexican culture and cartel violence, describing it as inauthentic. Additionally, some musical numbers have drawn ridicule, particularly one about vaginoplasty.
Recently, Karla Sofía Gascón, the film’s lead, made headlines after accusing the team of fellow nominee Fernanda Torres of speaking negatively about her and “Emilia Pérez.” In an interview, she expressed frustration over how social media teams undermine her work to elevate others. Gascón stated, “You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s.”
This sparked debate about whether her comments violated the Academy’s promotional guidelines, though sources suggest they haven’t affected the film’s campaign negatively. In a follow-up, Gascón clarified that her remarks were not aimed at Torres personally but were in response to toxic behavior online.
Despite her attempts to clarify, Gascón’s past statements have resurfaced, causing further backlash. Old posts where she expressed controversial opinions have begun circulating, and many are scrutinizing her past comments about hot-button issues like George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars. While some of these posts have been deleted, the internet never forgets, and screenshots are multiplying on social media.
As of now, there’s no word from Gascón, her team, or Netflix about the controversy. To regain a positive reputation, “Emilia Pérez” will likely need to shine at upcoming awards. The film’s journey through awards season has been exciting, but the controversies lingering around it may have already made a significant mark in cinematic history.
