Microsoft is diving into generative artificial intelligence for gaming with its new model called Muse. This AI was trained using Ninja Theory’s game Bleeding Edge, and it aims to assist Xbox developers in creating game elements. Muse can analyze game physics and environments, providing visuals and responses to player actions.
One exciting possibility with Muse is game preservation. Microsoft intends for this AI to scan and enhance its catalog of classic games, making them suitable for today’s technology.
Fatima Kardar, Microsoft’s VP for Gaming AI, shared in a press release: “The idea that classic games, once lost, could be revived for any screen with Xbox is thrilling.”
Microsoft plans to further explore how generative AI can support game teams in prototyping. They spoke with 27 game creators worldwide to ensure the research reflects what developers actually need.
However, the reaction from developers has not been positive. Many are voicing concerns about Muse. David Goldfarb, a noted game developer, expressed his frustration online, stating his strong disapproval of the AI’s introduction to the gaming scene.
As support for generative AI grows among executives, some developers feel more skeptical. Goldfarb argues that this technology threatens the artistry in games, risking the devaluation of years of dedication from creators. He worries that reliance on AI tools could sideline skilled workers and diminish the craft of game development.
Recent reports indicate that AI may be replacing many game development roles, amid ongoing layoffs in the industry. While some insist that creativity cannot be replicated by AI, fears about job security remain prominent.
One anonymous AAA developer pointed out the disconnect between the company’s ambitions for AI and the reality of what developers want. There’s a concern that internal discussions are being stifled due to fear of backlash or job loss.
