Ohio University Chillicothe Recognized as a Leading Professions-Focused Opportunity College by Carnegie: What This Means for Students

Ohio University Chillicothe just received a prestigious recognition as an “Opportunity College” from the Carnegie Classifications. Only about 300 universities in the U.S. hold this title. This designation highlights schools that help underrepresented students succeed and earn more than expected after graduation.

Alongside this, OHIO Chillicothe also earned the “Professions Focused” tag, meaning most of its graduates earn degrees geared toward specific careers. According to Lewatis McNeal, the Vice Provost for Regional Higher Education at OHIO, this achievement underscores their mission to offer quality education that prepares students for local job markets.

Statistics show that over 30% of graduates from this campus go into nursing or other health-related fields. Eighteen percent pursue business or similar degrees, while more than 10% focus on law enforcement, such as criminal justice programs.

An impressive 40% of students at OHIO Chillicothe receive Pell Grants, helping many afford college. The OHIO Regional Promise Program even covers tuition for eligible freshmen with a 3.0 GPA from high school.

This recognition comes at a time when many universities are re-evaluating their roles in providing accessible education. With rising costs and the COVID-19 pandemic affecting enrollment, programs like these are crucial in supporting students.
