Clarksville, TN – From June 10 to 13, 2025, students, faculty, and staff at Austin Peay State University (APSU) came together for the annual Govs Week of Service. This event aimed to connect with the community by volunteering for local nonprofits.
Organized by The Office of Community Engagement and Sustainability, partners included the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, Yaipak, Loaves and Fishes, and the Ajax Turner 50+ Center. These partnerships allowed participants to learn about and support important causes in the area.
Dr. Dava Wilson, a social work professor, shared her thoughts on volunteering. “Service isn’t just something you teach – it’s a lifestyle,” she said. Volunteering with her family at the library and the center brings her joy and hope for future generations.
Throughout the week, volunteers from APSU primarily helped Loaves and Fishes. This nonprofit plays a vital role in addressing hunger, distributing food and serving between 45,000 to 50,000 meals annually. Volunteers sorted and organized donations, ensuring those in need receive support and nourishment.
A significant number of volunteers also assisted at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library on June 12. They organized materials and prepared for upcoming events, aligning with the library’s mission to foster literacy and community engagement.
“Every task we complete is a step in building compassion,” Dr. Wilson emphasized. “By serving together, we create a legacy of kindness that can last for generations. Social work starts at home, with the values we share.”
APSU’s Govs Week of Service has become a valued tradition that not only enhances community ties but also raises awareness about social issues. Programs like these reflect a growing trend in universities nationwide. According to a recent survey by the Corporation for National and Community Service, over 1.5 million college students volunteered through their campuses, demonstrating the importance of civic engagement in today’s education.
In conclusion, APSU’s week of service has brought together hearts and hands for a common cause. As participants contribute to their community, they also teach resilience and compassion, ensuring that these values pass down to the next generation.
