Hyderabad: India has taken a big step towards hosting the 2036 Olympics. A top Indian delegation is visiting the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. This three-day trip shows the country’s determination to host the Summer Games.

This visit is special. It’s the first time an Indian delegation has formally expressed interest in hosting the Olympics. Led by Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghvi, the team included Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha and other officials. They presented Ahmedabad as the proposed host city.

Social media is buzzing with excitement about India’s bid. A tweet from The Khel India announced, “India has officially entered the race to host 2036 Olympics & Paralympics!”

The 2032 Olympics will take place in Brisbane, but India is focused on 2036. In October 2023, India sent a Letter of Intent to the IOC. This bid has strong backing, including support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and IOC member Nita Ambani.

During the visit, Sanghvi mentioned, “We had detailed discussions on international sports and explored collaboration. Gujarat is eager to become a key player in hosting major sports events.”

PT Usha shared a broader vision for the games. She said, “The Olympic Games in India would create a lasting impact for all Indians.”

However, the road to hosting won’t be easy. India faces competition from Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile for the event. The IOC has set out specific requirements that the country must meet.

Recently, the IOC has made changes in its selection process to allow for more member involvement. IOC chief Kirsty Coventry announced a pause to improve decision-making transparency.

Hosting the Olympics could greatly boost India’s global profile. Historical context shows that countries like China and Brazil experienced significant growth and recognition after hosting the games.
