On this day in 1975, Moorhead State College officially became Moorhead State University. This name change marked a significant moment in its history, celebrating its growth and achievements.
The transition was celebrated with informal ceremonies on the campus. Speakers, including college officials, reflected on this milestone. They emphasized that university status recognizes the institution’s dedication to excellence.
Dr. Roland Dille, then president of MSU, accepted a proclamation from board member Robert Irvine. He highlighted that this new title reflects the university’s continuing commitment to high-quality education. He believed that while humility is important, accepting recognition is also crucial for growth.
Dr. Clarence Glasrud, an English professor at MSU, shared insights about the school’s rich history. He pointed out that the university was built on a foundation of excellence, starting with its first president, Livingston Lord, who championed teacher training. Glasrud questioned how the university could maintain its common roots while striving for excellence, emphasizing that quality education must remain accessible to all students.
Senator Douglas Sillers, R-Moorhead, recounted his long efforts in the State Legislature to obtain university status. He noted that this recognition would strengthen the tri-college system in the region, which includes MSU, Concordia College, and North Dakota State University. The university’s evolution mirrors a larger trend in American education, where many colleges have gained university status over the years to acknowledge their growth and programs.
Since its founding in 1885 as a normal school, MSU has transformed significantly. It was renamed Moorhead State Teachers College in 1921, then Moorhead State College in 1957, before finally becoming Moorhead State University. This transition reflects broader trends in higher education, where institutions adapt to better serve students’ needs and expand program offerings.
About 200 people attended the celebration, showing strong community support for MSU’s new chapter.
