The latest updates for Windows 11 (24H2) have led to some serious problems for users. Reports indicate that certain SSD and HDD models are experiencing data corruption and accessibility issues after installing the KB5063878 security update and the KB5062660 preview update.
A PC enthusiast from Japan was among the first to notice this issue. They found that drives with Phison NAND controllers would disappear from the OS during heavy writing tasks, like transferring large files. Restarting the system restored some drives, but others stayed inaccessible.
This user theorized that the problem might stem from a drive cache issue due to a memory leak in the OS. Their tests showed that the problems typically arose in SSDs when more than 60% of the drive was used, especially after writing about 50GB continuously. HDDs also showed similar symptoms.
Other users have reported issues with various brands, including SanDisk, Corsair, and KIOXIA SSDs. It seems that drives with Phison PS5012-E12 and InnoGrit controllers are also affected. This widespread impact raises concerns about the reliability of certain storage devices when used with the latest Windows updates.
Microsoft has not yet officially recognized the issue, but Phison released a statement saying they are working with Microsoft to find a resolution. They acknowledge the disruption caused and are reviewing the affected controllers. According to industry standards, about 46% of environments faced security breaches last year, highlighting the importance of reliable software and hardware interaction.
Until a solution is found, it’s advisable for Windows users to avoid moving large files all at once. Instead, break them into smaller batches. For example, when extracting large compressed files, do it in stages rather than trying to extract everything at once.
