As the new academic year kicks off, the University of Houston-Victoria is gearing up to welcome students with exciting activities. This year, it’s not just any welcome—students will also be part of the Texas A&M University-Victoria community.
The first two weeks, called the Weeks of Welcome, will be packed with events to help students explore the campus and meet one another. Freddie Cantu, the director of Student Involvement, says these events are a great way for students to feel at home. “The more they engage, the more familiar the university will feel,” he explains.
The fun begins on September 1 with a Movie Night in Jaguar Hall Commons. Classes start on September 2, and there will be a Welcome Table in University Commons for students to grab information and get answers to any questions. The first day also features jaX’s Birthday Bash, complete with free shirts, birthday cake, and a scavenger hunt to help students navigate the campus.
From September 3 to 4, expect a lively atmosphere. On the 3rd, there’s a T-Shirt Swap where students can trade old UHV shirts for new A&M-Victoria shirts. Plus, a Part-Time Job Fair will offer important work opportunities for students. The day will wrap up with a Back 2 School Bingo night.
On September 4, the Fall Volunteer Fair kicks things off, helping students find community service opportunities. Later, Jag Fest—an evening of live music, food trucks, and fun—will take place downtown, aimed at celebrating the new chapter for the university.
The second week includes more chances to connect. Activities like DONUT be shy… stop by, an informal welcome with treats, and meetings with the Student Government Association will take place. There’s something for everyone—from financial aid office hours to a Speed Friending event.
On September 11, students will honor Patriot Day with a Field of Flags activity. An Involvement Fair later that evening will highlight various student organizations. Throughout all these events, students can meet faculty and staff who can assist them in their academic journey.
It’s crucial for students to take advantage of these early opportunities. Studies show that students who actively engage during their first weeks are more likely to succeed academically and socially. According to a recent survey by the American Council on Education, students who participate in campus activities are 25% more likely to stay in school.
Cantu emphasizes the importance of involvement: “I love to meet all new students who join the Jaguar family.” This sentiment reflects a growing trend in higher education where connection and community are recognized as vital to student success.
