Unlocking Growth: Kamal Haasan Urges U.S. Government to Implement Two-Year Tariff Moratorium and Support for MSMEs and Exporters

Kamal Haasan, the founder of the Makkal Needhi Maiam party, recently spoke out about the significant challenge facing Indian exporters due to the 50% tariff imposed by the U.S. government. He described this tariff as more than just an economic issue; it’s a threat to the livelihoods of many Indians.

Haasan called for immediate support from both the central and state governments. His suggestions included a two-year pause on loan repayments for small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and special credit lines to help exporters cope with the situation. He emphasized the need for faster processing of export credits, along with clearing overdue refunds related to Goods and Services Tax (GST) and other export incentives.

He also proposed that the government provide temporary reductions in power tariffs and freight support to encourage exporting to new markets. Moreover, he suggested creating a streamlined process for managing export compliance and refunds. Identifying new global markets is essential, he stressed, to ensure that affected sectors can thrive again.

Haasan urged that this should not just be a response to a crisis, but a long-term mission to secure India’s position in future supply chains. He mentioned key areas like rare earths, semiconductors, and advanced textiles that could bolster India’s standing internationally.

He remarked that these tariffs are not only about trade but are politically motivated, aimed at testing India’s resilience. He drew a parallel to Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts on self-reliance, suggesting that true independence comes from strategic planning rather than slogans.

Haasan expressed solidarity with exporters across various sectors, including textiles in Tiruppur and Noida, shrimp farmers in Andhra Pradesh, and the gems and jewelry industry in Gujarat. He emphasized that these individuals should not have to suffer due to geopolitical tensions.

For instance, a report from the World Trade Organization (WTO) noted a rise in global trade tensions, with tariffs affecting many countries. As businesses adapt to these changes, understanding how to navigate these challenges becomes increasingly essential.
