Forden first captured our hearts with “Toasty!” in Mortal Kombat II, released in 1993. It became a signature phrase in gaming, contributing to the franchise’s charm. In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Forden expressed pride in his years at NetherRealm, saying he had a great time creating games. He reminisced about the studio’s talented team and the fun they shared, mentioning a “Toasty” homage left in the studio.
Why now? He shared that he wants to reclaim his time for personal interests after decades in the industry.
Forden’s exit adds to the uncertainty at NetherRealm, especially after they announced no new downloadable characters or story content for Mortal Kombat 1. This decision came after the game’s recent release, which has not fared as well as earlier titles. As of August, Mortal Kombat 1 had sold 6.2 million copies. In contrast, its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, sold over 15 million, showcasing a sharp decline in interest.
Looking ahead, NetherRealm appears to be shifting focus to a new project, rumored to be Injustice 3, continuing their DC fighting game series. Fans are eager for what’s next, hoping it recaptures the magic that made earlier titles so popular.
Additionally, the Mortal Kombat universe is buzzing with upcoming releases. The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is set to launch at the end of October, showing the franchise’s commitment to its legacy. Meanwhile, the sequel film, Mortal Kombat II, has been pushed to May 15, 2026, likely in hopes of better positioning in a summer box office slot after a strong fan response to its trailer.
