At least 12 people were hurt, and two people died after a shooting in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, late Saturday night, October 5, 2025. The police confirmed the tragic events during a press conference, describing it as a “mass shooting event.”
Gunfire erupted around 11:30 p.m. in a busy area known for its nightlife and tourism. Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys explained that multiple attackers fired at each other in the thick of a crowd.
Among the victims was an adult woman, and two minors were also injured, one critically. Currently, three victims are in life-threatening condition, while nine others have injuries that aren’t life-threatening. The police are investigating the shooting and reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage to find those responsible.
Graboys emphasized the reckless nature of the shooting: “People who opened fire on each other had no regard for the safety of those around them.” At the time of the shooting, police were just a short distance from the scene, patrolling after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed expressed his sorrow over the incident, saying, “We’re praying for the victims and our city. Thousands gathered this weekend, but just a few changed everything.”
Interestingly, this mass shooting follows a troubling trend. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have already been over 500 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2025 alone, showing a growing concern for public safety in crowded areas.
As people take to social media to voice their thoughts, hashtags like #MontgomeryShooting are trending, reflecting outrage and grief. Experts suggest that community efforts aimed at reducing gun violence are more crucial than ever.
