This year’s Halo World Championship revealed exciting news about the iconic gaming franchise. As it gears up for its 25th anniversary, Halo is set to evolve in a big way.
The studio has announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the classic Halo: Combat Evolved from 2001. This new edition will use Unreal Engine 5, promising stunning graphics and updated gameplay. It will be available not only on Xbox consoles and PC but also on PlayStation 5 starting in 2026. Community director Brian Jarrard mentioned that players can team up regardless of their platforms, making it more inclusive.
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Jarrard and executive producer Damon Conn described this remake as a turning point for the franchise. Conn points out that they’ve enhanced animations, rebuilt environments, and added three new missions. Each mission introduces fresh lore, which aims to captivate both old and new players. “We want to reignite that spark,” Conn said.
Jarrard emphasized that this isn’t just a remaster; every aspect of the game has been touched in some way. “It’s more than just a graphics upgrade,” he explained. They are keen on staying true to the original while appealing to a new generation. This makes the question of what a modern first-person shooter looks like more relevant than ever.
The original game placed players on the planet Reach, amidst a battle between humans and the alien Covenant. It introduced players to Master Chief, the franchise’s beloved protagonist. The new missions will delve deeper into Master Chief’s story and that of Sergeant Johnson, a key figure in the fight against the Covenant.
Interestingly, Halo has experienced cross-platform success before. After struggles with its TV series on Paramount+, it found a new audience when episodes were released on Netflix. Jarrard noted, “This allowed new viewers to connect with the essence of Halo,” which resonates with the aims of Campaign Evolved.
As they approach the anniversary, the Halo Studios team is reflecting on 25 years of player feedback. They hope to revisit past choices, like split-screen gameplay. Jarrard acknowledged the demand for this feature, stating, “This was a core aspect of Halo. We’re excited to bring it back.”
New additions will enhance the old gameplay experience. Players can now access nine weapons from across the franchise that weren’t available in the original. Conn even teased that the energy sword, a fan favorite, will be usable in this version.
Jarrard shared his memories of navigating confusing maps in Combat Evolved. He recognizes how much user interface design has evolved, and the team plans to make improvements to level layouts and player guidance to enhance the flow of the game.
A hot topic among fans has been the inclusion of sprinting, a mechanic introduced in 2010. Conn, who worked on Halo: Infinite, stated that players will have the choice to sprint or not in Campaign Evolved. Jarrard added that the franchise has evolved over its 25-year history, with each title catering to different player preferences.
Ultimately, the core of Halo remains intact. The developers are committed to ensuring the combat experience players love is preserved, even as they introduce new features. “What makes Halo feel like Halo? That’s what we aim to keep,” Jarrard said.
