The Associated Student Government (ASG) at Miami University recently discussed issues affecting students, including workout class costs, sidewalk safety, and food service changes.
Senator Kali Barcroft raised a concern about the fees for workout classes at the Miami Rec Center. While students can access the Rec for free, participating in classes incurs additional costs. Barcroft suggested offering select free classes during the winter months, recognizing that cold weather makes exercise harder for many.
“It’s tough to justify these costs when students are already managing various expenses,” Barcroft explained. She believes that free classes could encourage more students to stay active during the winter.
Secretary Ryan Jeansonne noted that the Safety and Transportation and Campus Affairs committees might launch a wellness program in the spring to address this issue further.
In another discussion, Senator Eliane Amara highlighted the problem of damaged sidewalks, which pose a tripping hazard. This concern will be forwarded to the Safety and Transportation committee for review. “If senators spot broken sidewalks, they should document them and submit a physical facilities report,” Jeansonne advised.
Senator Quinten Ahler addressed a previous concern regarding items removed from the Dividends salad bar. He clarified that some products were discontinued because they weren’t financially viable. Unfortunately, this is part of a broader trend; King Cafe recently closed due to low business, and the Red Zone followed suit for similar reasons.
The ASG will convene again on Tuesday, October 28, at 6 p.m. in the Joslin Senate Chambers. This ongoing dialogue highlights the ASG’s commitment to addressing student concerns and promoting a healthier campus environment.
As student well-being remains a priority, providing access to affordable fitness options during winter could not only enhance physical health but also foster a stronger sense of community. Recent surveys indicate that 60% of college students feel discouraged to exercise during colder months due to costs and accessibility issues. By listening to student feedback, ASG is taking steps towards a more supportive campus experience.
