Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted ways with head coach Vitor Pereira, just 45 days after he signed a new three-year contract. His last match ended in a 3-0 defeat to Fulham, which he called his team’s worst performance. The result left Wolves at the bottom of the Premier League, still searching for their first win after 10 matches.
The club announced Pereira’s departure, stating that the “results and performances this term have fallen below acceptable standards.” For now, Under-21 head coach James Collins and Under-18 head coach Richard Walker will lead the training while Wolves looks for a new head coach. Notably, all of Pereira’s assistant coaches have also left the club, except for Director of Professional Football Domenico Teti, who previously worked with Pereira in Saudi Arabia.
Executive chairman Jeff Shi expressed gratitude for Pereira’s efforts but noted the disappointing start to the season. Pereira had signed his new contract even after Wolves recorded their worst start, with five consecutive losses. So far, they have managed only two points from ten league matches.
Pereira took over last December when Wolves were in a dire situation, sitting 19th in the table with just six points. He guided them to safety, finishing 16th. However, since a winning streak in April, the team has struggled, failing to win any of their last 14 league matches.
This ongoing poor performance has led to growing frustration among fans. After the Burnley game last week, Pereira faced criticism, including chants suggesting he would be fired. He acknowledged the situation, expressing understanding of the fans’ sentiments but defended his team’s work ethic.
This season has seen key player departures, with Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha moving to Manchester City and Manchester United, respectively. Wolves did make seven new signings, but critics argue that the squad lacks the depth and quality needed to compete.
Pereira’s frequent changes to the starting lineup—31 in the first ten games—suggested he was struggling to find a winning formula. While he tried different tactics, it appeared that he was losing his grip on the situation, making fans question if a change could really solve the club’s issues.
As it stands, Wolves’ situation looks grim. Historically, no team with just two points after ten games has escaped relegation in the Premier League, suggesting that immediate improvement is crucial for the club’s future.
