Rumors are swirling that Apple is planning to launch a budget-friendly MacBook, possibly starting at $599. This shift is surprising for a company known for its premium products.
Apple is not skimping on quality. Instead of simply reusing MacBook Air parts in a cheaper shell, they are designing a new device from scratch. This laptop might feature a smaller screen with lower resolution, powered by an iPhone processor.
Experts speculate that Apple could use a version of the A19 chip from the latest iPhone models. Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known industry analyst, hinted that they might even incorporate the A18 chip from the previous year.
The concept of a compact, low-cost laptop feels reminiscent of netbooks, which gained popularity in the late 2000s. Back then, netbooks were all about portability and affordability, catering to a growing trend toward web-based computing. The ASUS Eee PC was one of the first in this category, offering small sizes and low prices. However, the devices often struggled with performance, and their appeal faded as prices for regular laptops dropped.
Netbooks faced significant competition from devices like Chromebooks and iPads. The iPad, launched in 2010, quickly started to take market share away from netbooks. By 2013, netbooks were mostly gone. Instead, users found that tablets could perform many tasks better, especially with a keyboard attachment.
Apple’s new MacBook seems to nod to the netbook approach. While the exact screen size isn’t confirmed, it will likely be smaller than the current 13.6 inches of the MacBook Air. Some speculate it could even revisit the 12-inch size, similar to older models.
Tech analyst Ben Thompson has pointed out that Apple’s move could position it favorably in a market increasingly dominated by portable devices. Today’s consumers, especially students and casual users, seek lightweight laptops for basic tasks like browsing, streaming, and document editing.
The upcoming MacBook may not be the powerhouse needed for gaming or heavy video editing, but that’s okay for many buyers. It could provide the right mix of quality and affordability that many are looking for in a laptop.
