U.S. Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo recently met with local health care providers to talk about a serious issue: the rising cost of health care in Rhode Island. Elena Nicolella, head of the Rhode Island Health Center Association, highlighted a looming concern. Starting in January, the eight community health centers in Rhode Island expect a sharp rise in uninsured patients. She explained that this will partly result from the end of tax credits from the Affordable Care Act and new restrictions on federal Medicaid eligibility. Additionally, funding for health centers has dried up, while other revenue sources are dwindling.
The discussion emphasized how these cuts could hurt both patients and the stability of Rhode Island’s health care system. With one in five Rhode Islanders depending on community health centers for care, the situation is becoming critical.
