Food Bank Challenge Returns Just in Time for the Holidays

The 2025 Food Bank Challenge is set to kick off on November 19 and will run until December 19. Organized by the Loren H. Corder Foundation, this initiative has been a vital source of support for local food banks in Ocean Park, Ilwaco, and Chinook. Over the last six years, it has raised nearly $670,000, including $240,000 in matching funds from the foundation.

In 2024 alone, the foundation matched $14,000 for each food bank. Local contributions reached $92,000, resulting in a total of $134,000 that year. This year’s challenge comes at a critical moment, as many families are facing increased food insecurity.

The Growing Need

Recent disruptions, like the federal government shutdown that began on October 1, have placed additional strain on food banks and local families. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that around 16% of households in Pacific County rely on SNAP benefits, but officials worry a significant number of eligible families may not be receiving assistance.

Food banks are already seeing higher demand. Chuck Mikkola, treasurer of the Corder Foundation, noted a noticeable spike in visits. Vera Karnofski from the Chinook Food Bank mentioned that many families are struggling more than ever. Similarly, Charlotte Paliani of the Ocean Park Food Bank witnessed visitation double, noting people sometimes wait over half an hour for service.

In the words of Paliani, “The community response has been phenomenal,” as donations poured in during these tough weeks. The holiday season traditionally sees high demand at food banks, and efforts are made to provide special holiday meals for families.

The Importance of Cash Donations

While food donations are essential, cash contributions have their advantages. Food banks can purchase what they need most and cover operational costs like utilities and rent. With each donation, big or small, community members can make a direct impact.

According to the Foundation Center, donating to local food banks can stretch beyond just food items—supporting the infrastructure makes a lasting difference. Local food bank directors express gratitude for the community’s support, stating that the challenge helps ensure families have enough to eat, especially during the holidays.

Finally, if anyone wishes to contribute, cash donations can be sent to the food banks’ respective P.O. Boxes, detailed on their websites. The Chinook Food Bank operates on the first and third Thursdays of each month, while the Ocean Park Food Bank is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
