The Cornell University Chorale held its Fall 2025 Concert, “Passage of Dreams,” on Sunday evening at Bailey Hall. This event marked an important change, as it was their first time performing outside their usual venue, Sage Chapel.
Under the direction of Conductor Dr. Yen-Hsiang Nieh and guest conductor Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe—Nieh’s mentor—the concert combined a range of musical styles. From traditional South African pieces to Taiwanese folk songs, the program reflected a commitment to cultural diversity. Dr. Nieh emphasized the importance of showcasing a variety of musical traditions. “I try to include songs from different countries and languages every semester,” he explained.
Chorale President Pranav Shankar noted the unique qualities of each venue. While Sage Chapel feels intimate, Bailey Hall offers a more resonant, expansive sound—ideal for showcasing their growth as a performing ensemble.
The concert featured an array of instruments beyond just vocals, with strings, percussion, and even hand-clapping enriching the performance. Audience members reacted positively; graduate student Dheepak Chandrasekaran highlighted standout pieces like “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman and the South African song “Modimo.” He appreciated the multicultural approach, stating, “Catering to a larger audience like that is really great to see.”
The preparation for this event was extensive. Dr. Nieh shared that they started planning three months prior, meeting weekly to refine their performance. Shankar noted a special rehearsal with Scheibe, which added depth to their preparation, allowing them to learn directly from a seasoned conductor.
The evening was more than just a concert. It represented a vibrant community, bringing together students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Nieh stressed the sense of togetherness the Chorale fosters, inviting all Cornellians to join.
Reflecting on the night, Shankar conveyed the essence of the “Passage of Dreams” theme. “It’s about dreaming big and reaching for something greater,” he said, capturing the spirit of both the music and the community represented in the Chorale.
In a world where audiences seek diverse artistic expressions, the Cornell University Chorale’s approach stands out. As they continue to grow and adapt, it’s clear that their blend of cultural richness and musical talent creates an inspiring environment for everyone involved.
