Officials recently detained the mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew, the White House press secretary. This happened against the backdrop of intensified immigration enforcement by the Trump administration.
The woman, Bruna Caroline Ferreira, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Revere, Massachusetts. She is described as a “criminal illegal alien from Brazil.” Her tourist visa expired back in June 1999. Ferreira has a past arrest related to battery, but details about that case are unclear.
Currently, she is being held at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center while facing deportation proceedings. According to a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, the administration asserts that anyone unlawfully present in the U.S. is subject to deportation.
Reports indicate that Leavitt’s nephew has lived in New Hampshire with his father since birth and has not had contact with his mother for many years.
The story gained attention after being reported by WBUR, a public broadcaster. Leavitt did not comment on the situation for the outlet.
Ferreira’s family has set up a GoFundMe campaign, stating that she was brought to the U.S. as a child in 1998. They assert that she has worked hard to build a stable life and maintained her legal status through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This program aims to protect immigrants who came to the U.S. as minors from being deported.
However, recent reports from the Associated Press indicate that DACA recipients have not been exempt from detention in immigration sweeps. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin noted that DACA status can be revoked due to various offenses, including criminal charges.
