Penn State Parking and Transit Updates for Winter Break
Hey everyone! As winter break approaches, there are some important changes to parking and transit at Penn State’s University Park. Here’s what you need to know.
Parking Changes
From December 22 to January 2, weekend parking rules will apply. This means faculty, staff, and students with permits can park in designated areas during evening and weekend hours.
If you hold a core faculty/staff permit, you can park in certain student lots from December 22 to January 9.
From December 24 to January 2, parking in campus garages (East, Eisenhower, HUB, Nittany, and West) and commuter lots (Stadium West, Jordan East, and Porter North) will be free. Just keep in mind that overnight restrictions from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. in commuter lots still apply, and reserved spaces remain off-limits.
Also, departments are encouraged to move University vehicles into the parking garages. This helps those responsible for snow removal and ensures the vehicles are ready when needed.
CATABUS Service
CATABUS will also have a few changes:
- December 15 – 21: Limited service with no Red Link.
- December 22 – 24: No White Loop or Red Link service.
- December 26 – 31: Same as above.
From January 2 to January 11, expect reduced service again with no Red Link.

Campus Shuttle Updates
- On December 19, the shuttle service will operate with reduced routes.
- From December 22 to 23, each route will run one vehicle.
- Between December 24 and January 2, service will be limited.
- Beginning January 5, service via Beaver Avenue will be reduced to two vehicles. Regular service resumes on January 12.
Office Hours
The Transportation Services Office will close from noon to 3 p.m. on December 19. It will also be closed from December 24 to January 2, reopening on January 5. The Bike Den will have similar hours.

Key Insights
Traveling during winter break can be tricky. According to a recent survey, nearly 40% of students plan to travel home during this time, making it essential to be aware of service changes. Such adjustments help reduce stress on the system and ensure that everyone can navigate campus safely. Snow can complicate things, so it’s wise to stay informed about parking and transit updates.
Stay safe and enjoy your break!
