The Wegovy pill has officially launched, now offering patients a new option for weight management. This pill is the first oral version of the popular obesity drug, previously only available as an injection. Starting doses are available in pharmacies across the country, with higher doses expected soon.
The Wegovy pill, approved by the FDA on December 22, is also designed to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in obese or overweight individuals. It follows the success of the injectable version, which has been on the market since 2021 and faced shortages due to its popularity.
In clinical studies, the Wegovy pill proved effective in helping patients lose significant weight. In one study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, patients using a 25 milligram dose lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks. Comparatively, those on a placebo lost just 2.2%. Patients who combined the pill with reduced calorie intake and exercise could see an estimated 16.6% weight reduction.
Taking the Wegovy pill requires some specific instructions. Patients need to take it on an empty stomach and wait half an hour before eating for it to be effective. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting, similar to those associated with the injection version.
Pricing for the Wegovy pill is notable. The introductory price is $149 monthly for those not using insurance, while higher doses will cost $299. For those with insurance coverage, the price aligns with the injection at $1,349 monthly. However, some insured patients might only pay as little as $25 a month due to negotiated rates.
Novo Nordisk’s efforts to keep prices accessible have become a significant talking point. They previously reached a pricing agreement with the Trump administration in 2022, which may have set a precedent for how obesity medications are priced now.
Interestingly, Novo Nordisk isn’t the only company in this space. Eli Lilly is seeking FDA approval for its own obesity pill, Zepbound, which could enter the market later this year. This highlights a growing trend in weight management treatments, with more options potentially becoming available soon.
Overall, the Wegovy pill marks an exciting development in obesity treatment. It offers a different route for those struggling with weight issues, and as more options emerge, patients may find new paths to better health.
