Some interesting news from the Linux world may have gone unnoticed recently. Linutronix, the consulting firm known for its real-time “PREEMPT_RT” work, has been acquired by Intel and is entering a new phase.
As announced in late November, company founders Heinz Egger and Thomas Gleixner are stepping down from their roles as managing directors and will now serve as advisory consultants. Dr. Wilfried Wessner, who has been with Linutronix since 2022 as the director of research and development, is the new managing director.
In their announcement, Linutronix expressed commitment to building on the strong foundation created by its founders as they embark on this new chapter.
It’s worth noting that Thomas Gleixner is a significant figure in the Linux community. Recently, he updated his email address in the Linux kernel tree, transitioning from his Linutronix email to his kernel.org account. He jokingly remarked about consolidating his email addresses, highlighting a common struggle among many in the tech industry.
Gleixner’s work has had a lasting impact on the Linux kernel, particularly in areas such as system performance and real-time processing. His contributions make him a vital part of Linux’s evolution.
According to recent data from a 2023 survey, about 75% of developers use Linux in some capacity. This suggests that changes within companies like Linutronix are crucial for the ongoing growth and stability of the Linux ecosystem.
