In this challenge, competitors create a mock investment portfolio worth $100,000 for a fictional client. Their strategies are judged based on performance, risk management, and expense ratios. Vu’s disciplined and unique approach helped him secure the top spot.
Alongside him, his teammate Chandler Mason also performed admirably, finishing eighth. Both are part of the SMILE Fund program at UTC, where students manage real investments under expert guidance. Dr. Hunter Holzhauer, a finance professor and director of the SMILE Fund, noted that this year marked the program’s best performance in the competition’s history.
Vu took a different path with his portfolio. While many students followed conventional strategies, he chose to invest heavily in gold and emerging markets in Asia. “I believe in a global view rather than just focusing on the U.S. market,” he said. Miller, president of The E-Valuator, which hosts the competition, explained that events like this provide students with critical learning experiences, especially during volatile market periods.
