The Rangers have signed left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber to a minor league contract, including an invitation to MLB Spring Training. This deal gives Gomber a chance to showcase his skills and possibly earn a spot in the big leagues.
Gomber, who is 32, was drafted by the Cardinals in 2014. He made his Major League debut in 2018 but later went to the Rockies as part of the trade for Nolan Arenado. Initially, Gomber seemed poised to become a solid part of the Rockies’ rotation but faced mixed results during his time in Colorado.
In his first season with the Rockies, he posted a respectable 4.53 ERA, which showed promise. However, his performance fluctuated in the following years. While he improved his walk rate, his strikeouts drastically fell from 23.2% in 2021 to around 16% from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, his ground ball rate dropped, leading to concerns about his consistency on the mound.
The 2025 season was particularly tough for Gomber. His strikeout rate plummeted to 12.5%, and he struggled significantly, ending the season with a 7.49 ERA over 12 starts. This prompted the Rockies to release him in August. However, he rebounded with the Cubs’ Triple-A team, showing impressive performance and posting a 0.47 ERA in 19 innings.
This recent success gives some hope as he joins the Rangers. With a rotation that could include MacKenzie Gore, Jacob deGrom, and Nathan Eovaldi, Gomber provides depth in a lineup that has experienced injuries. The competition for the final rotation spot will include Gomber, Jack Leiter, and Jacob Latz.
While Gomber may not be the favorite for this position, his experience and late-season performance could allow him to sneak into the rotation, especially if injuries affect the other players. As teams often face challenges throughout the season, Gomber may have the opportunity to shine if given the chance.
