Talarico quickly responded, stating that Thompson’s depiction was a “mischaracterization” of their conversation. He clarified that he criticized Allred’s campaign style, not his identity.
Despite this explanation, the fallout was swift. Talarico faced backlash, prompting Allred—once a candidate who stepped back from the Senate race—to endorse Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who entered the race at the last minute. This shift has reignited discussions around identity politics and electability within the Democratic Party.
Talarico, who is White, argued that while his comments may have been poorly articulated, he understands the historical context that shapes perceptions of race. In a statement, he emphasized his awareness of how words can resonate differently given the country’s complex racial history.
In a separate interview, Allred expressed that Talarico’s response implied an admission of guilt. He noted, “Running six points ahead of your presidential candidate still leads to being called ‘mediocre’,” referencing his strong performance compared to Kamala Harris in Texas.
Thompson had initially supported Talarico, promoting him on social media without any compensation.
