Waymo has become a leader in the self-driving ride-hailing world, operating thousands of autonomous taxis across major U.S. cities. However, recent events have raised questions about their safety and operations.
During a Congressional hearing, Waymo’s chief safety officer, Mauricio Peña, faced tough questions about the company’s use of Chinese-made vehicles and overseas operators. This scrutiny comes after a Waymo robotaxi injured a child in Santa Monica, prompting a federal investigation.
Peña explained that while some operators work remotely from places like the Philippines, they mainly provide guidance—not direct control. Critics, including Senator Ed Markey, voiced concerns about safety. “Having people overseas influencing American vehicles is a safety issue,” he said, pointing to potential cybersecurity risks.
Waymo maintains that their vehicles are in charge at all times. They can call on human operators for context when faced with unexpected road situations. However, even if the remote operator isn’t physically handling the steering, they can still influence major decisions about the vehicle’s navigation.
Interestingly, Tesla is following a similar model. Their VP of vehicle engineering, Lars Moravy, stated that Tesla vehicles also use remote operators but emphasized strong security measures to prevent hacking.
These discussions highlight that current autonomous vehicles, including those from Waymo and Tesla, aren’t fully autonomous. They still depend on human intelligence, raising questions about safety as they share the road with human drivers.
Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that Tesla’s robotaxis crash three times more often than human-driven cars, even with human monitors. The introduction of remotely operated assistance could magnify these risks, leading lawmakers to call for stricter oversight.
Senator Markey highlighted worrying scenarios where foreign actors could exploit remote assistance roles to gain control over vehicles, potentially putting the public in danger.
As technology evolves, so too must the regulations and safety measures surrounding autonomous vehicles. Awareness of these issues continues to grow, reflecting broader concerns about the safety of self-driving cars in our communities.
