Heartwarming Bison Love Stories: Unveiling Nature’s Most Romantic Moments

Anita D. Stearns Mayo and James Haskell Mayo, II, have been on an amazing journey together for nearly 50 years. Their paths crossed at Howard University, a place that shaped both of their lives deeply.

Anita’s journey began because of her mother. A proud Howard graduate from the class of 1945, her mother wanted Anita to attend an HBCU—Historically Black College or University. Despite moving to Wisconsin in the 1920s and facing challenges as one of the few Black students in her area, Anita’s mother knew Howard was the right fit for her family.

James shares a similar story. His father graduated from Wilberforce University and later moved to D.C. for school. Growing up, James learned about Howard’s significance from his father, who often spoke about his time there. James went on to earn his bachelor’s, master’s, and law degree at Howard, proudly calling himself a three-time graduate.

Anita studied psychology and later received her master’s in guidance and counseling. Though she pursued law at the University of California, Berkeley, her heart still belongs to Howard. “Howard gave me two of the most important things in my life, my degrees and my wife,” James said fondly.

Their first meeting was quite serendipitous. Anita spent countless hours studying in Founders Library. One day, she noticed James across the table. A book falling at another table broke the silence, and they struck up a conversation. Although Anita was dating someone else at the time, she felt a spark with James.

Their friendship blossomed, leading to an engagement during Anita’s sophomore year. After meeting her family, they took their time and ultimately tied the knot after both completed their master’s degrees.

James instantly knew Anita was someone special. He had a “triple B list” of qualities he sought in a partner: Black, brilliant, and beautiful. When he met Anita, she checked all the boxes. For Anita, finding someone who shared her passion for education was crucial.

They believe that Howard fosters a strong intellectual curiosity. “If you go to a university like Howard, you’re serious about your studies,” Anita said. They often shared late-night conversations, building a solid foundation for their relationship.

James highlights the exposure they had to influential figures through programs like Project Black Awareness, which brought prominent speakers to campus, including Angela Davis and Amiri Baraka. These experiences shaped their aspirations and commitment to serve their community.

The couple remains active in alumni activities, having even reestablished the Bay Area Howard University Alumni Club. Their ongoing commitment to Howard exemplifies the university’s spirit, which emphasizes truth and service. They aspire to give back and inspire future generations, making their story one of love, ambition, and enduring connection to their university.

As the world around them changes, their roots and values remain solid. Their journey illustrates the powerful impact Howard University has had not just on their relationship, but on their lives overall.
