Aston Martin has hit a rough patch in the new season, leaving driver Fernando Alonso feeling the pressure. Team principal Adrian Newey has shared that Alonso is in a “hard mental place” due to ongoing issues with their Honda engine. These reliability problems have made it tough for them to get consistent practice on the track.
During the first practice for the Australian Grand Prix, Alonso couldn’t even compete because of his Honda power unit failing him. He managed to complete 17 laps in the second session but lagged nearly five seconds behind the lead.
Alonso knows this struggle well. From 2015 to 2017, he faced similar problems at McLaren with Honda engines that were neither reliable nor competitive. After three challenging seasons, both parties went their separate ways.
Newey praised Alonso, saying, “He’s one of the true greats.” At 44, Alonso continues to impress with his speed and skill. Newey highlighted that Alonso’s reaction times remain sharp, and his eyesight is still excellent – he even had the best start reaction time last year.
Despite the challenges, Newey pointed out that they knew this year would be tough. They entered the season late and with a lot of work to catch up on. For Alonso, the mental toll of these setbacks is significant.
According to a recent survey by Motorsport Network, 68% of F1 fans feel that reliability plays a key role in a team’s success. As teams push the limits of technology, ongoing reliability issues have become a recurring theme in the sport. Many fans are vocal on social media, with hashtags like #FixTheEngines trending whenever there’s a mechanical failure.
As the season unfolds, Aston Martin will need to address these engine problems to give Alonso a fighting chance. The combination of his talent and the team’s improvement will determine how they move forward.
