NAPA, Calif. — The University of Hawai’i men’s golf team faced a tough challenge on the first day of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational. After two rounds at the Silverado Country Club, known for its history with the PGA Tour, the team ended up in 12th place with a total score of 587 (+11).
In the morning, the Rainbow Warriors displayed strong play, shooting a solid 285 (-3) in their first round. However, the narrow, tree-lined fairways proved challenging in the second round, leading to a score of 302 (+14). Despite this setback, they remain 10 strokes away from a top 10 finish.
Nathan Szpakowicz was a standout, starting the tournament with an impressive 3-under 69. He followed up with a 75, finishing the day at even-par (144), tying for 33rd place. Sophomore Dane Watanabe also contributed well, posting an even-par 72 in the morning round and a 74 in the afternoon for a total of 146 (+2), placing him tied for 45th.
Senior Alec Hilgers added depth to the team, shooting an even-par 72 and finishing tied for 56th with a score of 148 (+4). Teammates James Whitworth and Chris Salem are both in 60th place, each with a two-round total of 150 (+6).
On the leaderboard, BYU is leading the 14-team field with a stunning score of 28-under 548. Kihei Akina leads individually, having shot a remarkable 12-under-par 132 (65-67).
This tournament serves more than just competition; it’s part of the PGA TOUR Pathway to Progression program. This initiative aims to connect student-athletes with professional golf opportunities, offering an environment rich in career development resources.
The final round will take place on Tuesday, and the Rainbow Warriors are keen to improve their standings.
